The Brooklyn in Portoro Gold

One of the most highly prized and exclusive materials, genuine Portoro marble is only quarried on the The Brooklyn in Portoro Gold island of Porto Venere in the Ligurian province of La Spezia, Northern Italy. It is extracted in small volumes from vaulted chambers, supported by pillars to minimize any impact to the landscape. Its name derives from the French term ‘Porte d’Or’ or Golden Door. This marble has been used since Roman times, but its export outside Italy only began in the early 19th century. The very best Portoro displays a bright black base colour with intense gold veins running through it and is undoubtedly one of the most dramatic materials in our Collection.
